Betsy Robertson

"I grew up with photography firmly rooted in my genes. My mother never took her finger off the trigger of her 35mm point & shoot. She was like our own personal family paparazzi. My father was a photographer in the Navy and allowed me to tinker with his plethora of old camera gear. I spent hours pouring through his black & white prints. My mom was the queen of candid while my dad turned out calculated images of art. Each Christmas, I made Family Photo Albums out of leftover pictures and craft paper. Nothing pleased me more than to watch the tears roll down each family members’ face as they remembered times of comedy and cherished family memories. I was a photography addict.

Empowered with a new digital Canon camera and some larger-than-life lenses, I finally made the move to pursue photography on a professional level in 2002.

From the start, I aimed to capture emotion in my images. I was inspired to shoot candidly and in a less formal manner than what I knew to be traditional photography. Now, this photojournalistic style is all I see. Nothing is more rewarding to me than to hear someone gasp, sniffle or laugh out loud at their images. Just knowing that I was able to capture the rawness and emotion I saw through my lens is what photography is all about to me."
